Dear Editor,

The ideology Fairfax Democrats peddle is not forward thinking as their party contends – on the contrary it is backward looking. Socialism – discredited by the policies of Lenin, Stalin, Mao, and Pol Pot – was invented by Claude Henri de Rouvroy, comte de Saint-Simon who died in 1825; we are soon coming on the 200th anniversary of his death.

Their tired ideas are just that tired, tortured, and pompous. They would be well advised to give virtue signaling a rest and liven up their cloistered world by reading Ludwig von Mises, Milton Friedman, and Friedrich Hayek. If that does not work, they should try Ayn Rand, generations of erstwhile college socialists – and I and many of today’s Republicans humbly admit we fall into that sorry category – found our way after reading Atlas Shrugged or The Fountainhead.

If they want to learn what ails them? Joseph Alois Schumpeter (1883-1950) long ago anticipated that capitalism would bring about its own downfall because the success of capitalism would bread values hostile to it by so-called intellectuals. Before many of them or perhaps their parents were born, Schumpeter saw them coming. I hope Fairfax Republicans can prove him wrong.
