Reston Hospital first in region to offer incisionless reflux surgery

Sixty million Americans experience frequent gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

GERD occurs when the stomach acid climbs up the esophagus and creates a burning sensation in the chest and throat. GERD isn’t just a disease of discomfort; left untreated it can lead to esophageal cancer.

Reston Hospital Center's Comprehensive GI Center is the first in the Washington metropolitan region to offer a new method of minimally invasive anti-GERD surgery. The most recent advance in anti-GERD surgeries, transoral incisionless fundoplication, is now being performed by Drs. Daniel Turgeon and Karim Trad utilizing the EsophyX surgical device. EsophyX is passed through the mouth into the stomach, with the guidance of an endoscope, or small flexible camera.

The device has the ability to fix the “broken valve” connecting the esophagus and stomach and help patients move on to a life without heartburn.

A recent study demonstrated that 85 of patients receiving this procedure remained off of daily PPIs and 75 percent of patients experienced total elimination of heartburn at one year after EsophyX surgery, according to a Reston Hospital release.
