72 hours to celebrate and commemorate

Memorial Day weekend is a dichotomy: It's a celebration of our freedom as well as a somber remembrance of the lives that gave us that freedom.

Originally known as Decoration Day, the commemoration began in 1868 to honor the fallen soldiers of the Civil War by decorating their graves with flags and flowers. Since that time, every generation has had a war to endure. For some, Memorial Day is a time to grieve; for others, it is simply a holiday.

Never forget

Begin by observing the purpose of Memorial Day with a visit to Arlington National Cemetery and bear witness to the laying of the wreath ceremony held regularly. Just prior to Memorial Day weekend, soldiers place American flags in front of each gravestone in a tradition of honor known as "Flags-in."

You can also pay tribute to our heroes at ceremonies at the following memorials in or near Washington, D.C.: Vietnam Veterans Memorial (known as “The Wall”), Women in Military Service for America Memorial, United States Navy Memorial, National World War II Memorial, Korean War Veterans Memorial and, the most recent, U.S. Air Force Memorial.

Starting at 2 p.m. on Memorial Day, the American Veterans Center presents the National Memorial Day Parade down Constitution Avenue. This is an excellent opportunity to honor and celebrate those who have served in uniform from the American Revolution to Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Wings and wheels

On Sunday, May 25 at noon, watch thousands of motorcyclists taking part in the Rolling Thunder Motorcycle Rally depart from the Pentagon parking lot, ride across the Memorial Bridge and roar through downtown Washington, D.C. The best vantage point is atop Memorial Bridge, which is walking distance from the Arlington National Cemetery Metro station.

In Arlington County, Crystal City has launched a playful public art display called Crystal Flight to attract more visitors. Throughout the summer, an exhibit of 50 decorated airplane statues are on display in selected spots along a nearly five-mile loop.

Celebrate with music

On May 25 at 8 p.m., PBS is hosting a National Memorial Day Concert on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol building. Actor Gary Sinise will be there along with singers Gladys Knight and Sarah Brightman, plus The National Symphony Orchestra and many other patriotic groups.

Also on May 25, Wolf Trap is hosting its annual free Summer Blast Off! concert featuring "The Presidents Own" U.S. Marine Band followed by a spectacular fireworks display. Gates open at 7 p.m. for the 8 p.m. concert; the fireworks viewing area opens around 9:30 p.m.

Nearby in Alexandria at Fort Ward Park is the Memorial Day Jazz Festival on May 26. A different band plays big band, swing and contemporary jazz music each hour. Amphitheater seating is available and picnics are welcome.

So with humble appreciation this Memorial Day, watch a parade of veterans, attend a concert of patriotic songs, pay tribute at a cemetery ... and have don't forget to have fun!
