Herndon boys, Robinson girls win Concorde titles

The Herndon boys soccer team and Robinson girls soccer team each won Concorde District championships Saturday afternoon. In the boys final, the Hornets appeared headed for overtime against Westfield before a goal from Sean Murnane with 20 seconds remaining gave Herndon a 1-0 victory.

The Hornets were awarded a free kick about 20 yards outside their own 18-yard box and senior Christian McLaughlin sent the ball to Murnane streaking up the left sideline. Murnane dribbled around Westfield keeper Tony Nosal, who had come off his line, and calmly fired the ball into the empty net.

“It's great to tuck in the final goal, especially coming back here,” said Murnane, who transferred to Herndon from Westfield this year. “Being able to bring a championship back to Herndon feels really good. The whole team should be proud.”

In the girls final, Robinson held a 1-0 halftime lead over Westfield thanks to a Stephanie Johnson goal, but the Bulldogs tied the game less than 10 minutes into the second half when senior Heather Hovanesian deflected in a cross from Brittany Bonzano.

The Rams answered with less than 10 minutes to play when sophomore Audrey Barry fought the ball away from a Westfield defender and sent a low shot into the right corner of the net. Robinson held on for a 2-1 win.
