Memorial honors fallen Virginia Tech student

Family, teachers, neighbors and friends gathered on Saturday, May 10, at Canterbury Woods Park for a memorial dedication ceremony honoring Mary Karen Read, the Virgina Tech freshman from Annandale killed during the shootings at the school in April 2007.

The memorial, which consists of a flagstone path leading to a stone bench surrounded by crape myrtles and bushes, can be found off of the Canterbury Wood Park trail, along Braddock Road near its intersection with Wakefield Chapel Road. The memorial also features a “Hokie” stone with Read’s name inscribed on a mounted brass plaque. The stone was donated by Virginia Tech. Individual and community donations paid for the memorial’s construction.

Along with Read family members, including father Peter Read, the event was attended by Braddock District Supervisor Sharon Bulova (D), Del. Vivian Watts (D-Annandale), Annandale High School band director Jack Elgin, and Nancy DeVera of the Annandale High School Band Booster Club.
