Centreville's Farrar commits
Centreville senior Ryan Farrar has committed to play basketball at the University of Mary Washington this winter. According to Wildcats coach Brian Doyle, Farrar was choosing between three or four schools, but UMW was always his No. 1 choice.
"As a coach, you always try to tell them to keep their options open, but he was very much interested in Mary Washington from early on," Doyle said.
Farrar says Mary Washington was the first campus he visited after hearing good things about the university from friends and relatives, and he was immediately impressed.
"I fell in love with the campus," Farrar said. "I felt like I was home."
A two-year captain, the 6-foot-1 Farrar averaged 14 points and four rebounds per game for Centreville in 2007-08, good enough to earn him first team All-Concorde District honors. He shot 41 percent from 3-point range and 83 percent from the free throw line.
"His work ethic is second to none," Doyle said. "His attitude never changed whether we were playing well or not. Everything he's gotten, he's worked hard to get."
Farrar admitted that he had struggles at times playing at Centreville, but he will carry the lessons he learned with him to college and beyond.
"I learned that hard work pays off," he said. "We improved as a team every season. It just made me realize how hard I had to work to learn how to win."
The University of Mary Washington is a Division III school located in Fredericksburg. The Eagles finished the 2007-08 season with a record of 18-9 overall and 11-5 in Capital Athletic Conference play, falling in the CAC championship game.
"I'm just going to fill the role that I'm given to help the team be successful," Farrar said. "I want to excel in academics as well as basketball."
