Finding just the right prom dress

Tysons Corner Center’s teen stylist, Hilary Symington, is a 17-year-old senior at McLean High School. President of the book club and a recent state finalist in DECA, a high school marketing group, Hilary will be majoring in mathematics at college next fall. But don’t let her major fool you; her friends know they can “count” on her for sensationally stylish fashion advice.

The same way that prom is not just a dance, a prom dress is never just a dress. It’s a statement, a masterpiece, an extension of one’s personality. And why shouldn’t it be? A fancy occasion is as rare to a high school girl as a week without homework. Why shouldn’t she savor every second of preparation, every department store fitting room, every moment of dress shopping? This is her night and this is her dress.

As exciting as prom dress shopping may be, it can be equally daunting. So, cut out this article before you hit the mall. Think of it as your little prom cheat sheet to help you find just the right style for you. (Don’t worry, it’ll be our secret!)

Fairytale princess

In shades of whisper pink and the palest of pales, these chiffon “flowy” dresses make any girl look like a fairy princess. Gowns in golden yellow are my personal favorites, bringing to mind beautiful images of Belle from "Beauty in the Beast."

Goody Two Shoes

These brand-name dresses are tongue-in-chic references to the prim and proper cotillions of the 1950s. Lacy and delicate, they’ll have you feeling extra sweet.

Old Hollywood

Way before our time, the Hollywood of yesteryear was a glamor showcase. Such icons as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor always looked incredibly gorgeous in deep shades of scarlet and sultry black as they strutted down the red carpet.

Blindingly bright

If being a wallflower is not your thing, stand out in a sequin-covered shine-to-the-max mini-dress. Especially hot in a bright color like fuchsia or royal purple, these dresses scream to be noticed.

Urban sophisticate

Whether you’re from the suburbs or the middle of nowhere, you can be in a New York state of mind for prom. Basic black is not only incredibly flattering, but it also gives that air of sophistication. Tres chic!
