Hornets softball falters at Centreville

The Herndon softball team dropped a tough game to Centreville Monday night, 7-0.

Centreville, which improved to 16-2 overall and 11-0 in the Concorde District, already had the No. 1 seed in the district tournament in hand. Herndon fell to 11-6, 6-4, and will most likely play as the second seed in the tournament, which starts next week.

Senior pitcher Katie Briggs went the distance for Herndon, allowing six hits and four earned runs. She struck out six batters and walked only one.

At the plate, the Hornets were only able to muscle three hits off Centreville pitcher Brianne Pease – courtesy of Marra Hvozdovic, Briggs and Julia Miller. Chelsea Roseberry reached base on a walk.

Herndon closes out the regular season at Robinson Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Fairfax graduate Schmitt selected by Seahawks

The Seattle Seahawks selected Fairfax High School graduate Owen Schmitt with the 163rd pick -- a fifth-round choice -- in last weekend's NFL Draft.

Schmitt, a 6-foot-2, 247-pound fullback who served as Heisman Trophy candidate Steve Slaton's primary blocking back at West Virginia University, will look to earn a spot on special teams and possibly serve as incumbent Leonard Weaver's backup.
