Springfield rape suspect caught
Police have arrested a suspect believed responsible for the Feb. 8 rape and malicious wounding of a 41-year-old man in a laundry room of the Springfield Gardens Apartments.German G. Gradiz-Flores, 27, of no fixed address, was arrested in a Prince George's County hospital, where he was being treated for non-life-threatening wounds he allegedly received during the 8 a.m. incident.
A maintenance worker found the victim in the laundry room of the complex. He was transported to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery and remained in critical condition until last week. Police would not confirm the current condition of the victim.
After the incident, police said Gradiz-Flores allegedly tried to break into area cars, eventually stealing a bicycle, which was ridden to Sterling Grove Drive, where a 1994 Honda Accord was then stolen and later found along East West Highway in Prince George's County.
Police confirmed that blood was found on both the bicycle and inside of the car. It is still unclear if the blood belonged to the victim or Gradiz-Flores.
No charges of malicious wounding have been placed against Gradiz-Flores, since police are still collecting evidence, said Fairfax County Police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell.
Gradiz-Flores has been charged with two counts of grand larceny and is being held at the Fairfax County Adult Detention Center.
Police are still determining the relationship, if any, between the suspect and the victim.
