WEST*GROUP to build carbon-neutral house
WEST*GROUP is constructing one of the first "carbon-neutral" houses in the mid-Atlantic region. The project combines efficient building design, energy saving technology and location to reduce carbon emissions, which are the leading source of greenhouse gases. At completion, the house is projected to use 70 to 80 percent less energy per square foot than a comparable new house, according to WEST*GROUP.The home is being built in partnership with Fairfax-based GreenSpur Inc.
Environmentally friendly features of the house include a geothermal system for temperature control, a solar hot water system and photovoltaic panels to generate electricity. Groundbreaking for the project will take place June 19 at 10
a.m. at 1310 Calder Road in McLean. Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerald Connolly, Dranesville District Supervisor John Faust, Del. Margi Vanderhye and other local elected leaders will participate in the ceremony.
The "CharityWorks Dream House" will be open to the public for several weeks next spring. Ticket proceeds from the Dream House will go to local charity.
