Board backs I-66 study
The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors expressed support Monday for reviving a Virginia Department of Transportation study of options to relieve congestion on Interstate 66 that could include transit. The environmental impact study, a precursor to planning any major project, was stopped in 2002 due to lack of funding. The study will examine the possibility of adding lanes to the highway as well as adding additional bus or rail capacity.
In the past, the board has expressed a strong preference for extending rail west down I-66, beyond the Vienna Metro Station, but Supervisor Pat Herrity (R-Springfield), who asked the board to write a letter supporting the study, said the board should be open to all options.
“I think we need to let the study run its course,” he said.
However, some of his colleagues bristled at his comments and wanted to explicitly state its preference for rail in the letter to VDOT.
“I am not going to sign a letter that suggests that the board is retreating from its prior position on rail in this corridor,” board Chairman Gerry Connolly (D-At large) said.
