Police: Reston-area robberies not a trend

Police are looking at two, possibly three, suspects in four armed robberies that occurred in the Reston area over a week's time, but they say the incidents do not constitute a trend.

The first occurred around 12:30 a.m. on Friday, May 23, when a 25-year-old Herndon-area man parked his car and began walking to his apartment on John Eppes Road. A man walked toward him, pointed a gun at him and demanded money. The victim relinquished an undisclosed amount of money and the suspect fled.

Moments later, a 27-year-old Herndon-area woman was sitting inside her car with a 25-year-old man, also from the Herndon area. They were parked on William Short Circle, when a man approached and tapped on the window. The occupants did not acknowledge the man so he opened the door and pointed a gun at them. The suspect ordered them to hand over their money. The victims did not comply and the suspect fled. There were no injuries in either case.

The suspect was described similarly in both incidents. He was white or Hispanic, about 25 years old. He was about 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighed 130 to 150 pounds. A black mask was described in the second robbery.

"Both those descriptions were similar, and the time frames were close," said 1st Lt. Andy Hill, assistant commander of the Fairfax County Police Department’s Reston District Station.

In a third incident 20 hours later, a 47-year old Maryland man was robbed at gunpoint in the 11700 block of Stratford House Place. The suspect in this case was described as white and approximately 16 to 18 years old. He was about 5 feet 10 inches tall and weighed 170 pounds.

Hill said police are looking at the possibility that it was the same suspect as the previous two robberies. "We are working that as a possibility but that has not been confirmed," he said.

The fourth robbery took place on Thursday, May 29. A 32-year-old Reston woman reported being robbed while walking on South Lakes Drive at 3:45 a.m..

She was pushed to the ground and a suspect demanded money, while implying he had a gun. He took property and cash, then fled. The suspect in this last incident was described as black and in his 20s. He was approximately 6 feet tall and 175 pounds.

"I wouldn't consider this a trend at this point," said Hill. "These all happened in such a short time period and in different parts of the district. Generally a rising trend occurs over a longer period of time in one general area."

According to Hill, all four cases have been turned over to the Fairfax County Criminal Investigations Bureau, Robbery Section and all the cases are actively under investigation.
