Centreville's Warren Denny drives for a layup in Tuesday's loss to Robinson. One of three superb sophomores for Centreville, Denny finished with 18 points and 13 rebounds – his fourth consecutive double-double -- Tin Nguyen

Centreville's sophomores still developing

Games such as Tuesday's 66-59 loss to Robinson are paramount to the development of a young team like Centreville.

The problem is that coaches such as Centreville's Brian Doyle don't always want to wait.

“It's tough for sophomores to come in and do it night in and night out,” said Doyle, whose team starts two sophomores and has another logging significant minutes off the bench. “As coaches, you want it now. You don't want to look forward to next year.”

Although Centreville can lay claim to one of the area's most prolific scorers in senior guard Ryan Farrar, the Wildcats' sophomores will eventually lead this team to success.

While Farrar struggled shooting the ball Tuesday, Centreville squandered a 12-point halftime lead and wasn't able to do enough down the stretch before suffering its sixth district loss of the season. The Wildcats are now 5-11 overall, 2-6 in the Concorde District.

Perhaps Centreville's most talented player not named Farrar, sophomore guard Warren Denny has shown a proclivity to score and rebound. Denny contributed 18 points and 13 rebounds Tuesday night, his fourth consecutive double-double.

Sophomore point guard Nick Tisinger, despite not recording an assist last night, has still posted 13 helpers over his past four games, while only turning the ball over four times during that span.

Lastly, sophomore guard Bobby Warhurst, who likewise didn't have his best night Tuesday, notched a career-high 17 points in last Friday's game at Chantilly.

“They're all going to be real good basketball players,” said Doyle, whose team will host Herndon Friday at 7:45 p.m. “Every one of them is a student of the game. We're just trying to accelerate their development a little bit.”

While this trio is clearly the future for Doyle's Wildcats, Farrar remains a very talented presence. Despite making only 3 of 12 shots from the field, Farrar made all 13 of his free throw attempts Tuesday, scoring 13 points in the second quarter. As a team, Centreville outscored Robinson, 24-7, during the second to assume a 36-24 advantage at the break.

“They played physical,” Doyle said. “I don't want to take anything away from Robinson because they beat us, but I didn't feel like we were executing poorly. Sometimes we were executing well ... we just couldn't knock down shots. But we're getting better. We're a young team.”
