Farrar does it all for Centreville

Few boys basketball teams in the Northern Region lost more to graduation at the end of last season than Centreville. The Wildcats entered 2007-08 minus nearly 50 points and 30 rebounds per game from a year ago, and Ryan Farrar knew he would need to step up to help fill the void.

Farrar spent the off-season focused on his conditioning, and it has paid dividends in the early going this year.

“I feel a lot more in shape,” said Farrar, a three-year starter. “I feel better and I can do the things that I want to do now. I feel I can play any spot on the court.”

The senior's improvement is quite evident, as he is at or near the top of almost every statistical category for Centreville. Farrar leads the Wildcats in scoring (12.5 ppg), assists (28) and steals (18), and is third in rebounds (3.8 rpg). He is also shooting 82 percent from the free throw line and 43 percent from 3-point range.

“That's his strength, but he's more than just a 3-point shooter,” said Wildcats coach Brian Doyle. “He's a kid that can play basketball. He's strong so he can defend people, he's one of our better rebounders. The 3-point thing is a little flashy, but he's worked hard to become a real well-rounded basketball player.”

His numbers alone make Farrar a player to look up to, but Doyle says it is his work ethic that most impresses his teammates. Though Centreville is just 3-9 on the season, Farrar always remains positive at practice and works as hard as anyone on the team.

“The guys respect him because of how hard he works,” Doyle said. “He's earned it. He's a leader without saying anything because everybody knows how hard he works.”

Added Farrar, “I've been a leader on this team basically since my sophomore year. I wouldn't have it any other way.”

Making Farrar's accomplishments even more impressive is the fact that opposing teams know that he is the Wildcats' go-to guy.

“He's our guy and everybody knows that,” Doyle said. “We have some other guys that can score and we don't want to put it all on him, but Ryan's our leading scorer and that's not going to change.”

Farrar has been contacted by some Division III colleges, but he is completely committed to the present and to giving his team everything he has before moving on to the next level.

“Mostly I'm just trying to keep my grades up and focus on this season,” he said. “I'm talking to a couple colleges here and there, but the season is what's most important right now.”
