BREAKING NEWS: Police seek Springfield rapist

Fairfax County and Prince George's County police are searching for a Hispanic male, possibly injured, who is wanted for sexually assaulting and seriously wounding another Hispanic male in the laundry room of the Springfield Gardens Apartments complex in central Springfield.

At around 8 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, a maintenance worker found the 41-year-old victim on the floor of the laundry room. Police said that the victim lost a great deal of blood. The victim was sent to Inova Fairfax Hospital and had surgery but remains in critical condition.

The extent of the victim's injuries and what, if any weapons were used against him have not been released by police.

After the incident, the suspect, a 25-30-year-old Hispanic male, may have tried to steal cars immediately outside the apartment complex. Blood was found in an undisclosed number of cars that the suspect allegedly attempted to steal.

Police are assuming that the suspect then stole a bicycle from the area of the apartments and rode to Sterling Grove Drive, where a 1994 Honda Accord was then stolen and later found along East West Highway in Prince George's County.

Blood on the bicycle and in the car was also found. It is not clear if the blood belonged to the victim or the suspect, said Lt. Dan Janickey, the assistant commander of the Franconia District Station.

Police said they did not believe the incident to be random.

We're trying to determine the nature of the relationship of the two men if any,” said Fairfax police spokeswoman Lucy Caldwell, who added that the victim has not been able to be interviewed by police.
