Last meeting for Connolly as chairman
Fairfax County Board of Supervisors Chairman Gerry Connolly (D-at large) officially submitted his resignation from the board Dec. 8 to begin his first term in the U.S. House of Representatives' 11th District.
Connolly's official last day as chairman will be Jan. 2, 2009, and his official first day as a congressman is Jan. 3. He said he picked Jan. 2 in part because he wants to be furloughed along with the rest of county staff and other board members.
His board colleagues presented Connolly with a lengthy, partially tongue-in-cheek resolution honoring his many accomplishments during five years as chairman and nine years as Providence District supervisor, while poking fun at his fondness for Latin terms and his reportedly tiny Capitol Hill office.
Connolly said the board made "great headway" on the six-point agenda it laid out at the start of his first term as chairman, and that he hoped the board would continue working on those issues: gangs, education, environment, revenue diversification, affordable housing and transportation.
He said it has been "truly a privilege" to serve the citizens of Fairfax County and promised to bring his "passion for results-oriented government" to the federal level.
Also at the Dec. 8 meeting, the board voted to ask the Fairfax County Circuit Court to set the special election to replace Connolly for Feb. 3, 2009.
