Historic drive: For residents looking for a scenic and informative trip, the Journey Through Hallowed Ground Partnership has an interactive Web site and a guide book about the 175-mile corridor that runs from Gettysburg in Pennsylvania to Monticello in Charlottesville.

The Web site allows visitors to plan their own itinerary based on themes like presidents, African American history, natural history and scenic views. There is also a guidebook, written by noted travel book author David Edwin Lillard, which features 12 detailed maps of the corridor, county-by-county guides to the sites, attractions and back roads, and eight "Create Your Own Journeys." It highlights shops and stops in historic downtowns, lodgings, wineries, restaurants, farmers markets, antiques, live entertainment, galleries and museums.

The Journey Through Hallowed Ground includes nine presidential homes, numerous wineries, 13 national park units, the largest collection of Civil War sites, shops, fine restaurants and 16 historic communities.

The route also offers opportunities to hike, bike and explore scenic rivers, roads and landscapes. The region, also known as "Where America Happened," has sites spanning 400 years of history. According to partnership, the trip can be made on one tank of gas.
