Mason slugs it out on diamond
The George Mason University baseball team has been red-hot over the past few weeks.
How hot, exactly?
Playing for the first time this season as an above-.500 team on Tuesday afternoon, four George Mason pitchers surrendered a total of nine runs on 15 hits to visiting Georgetown, but the Patriots still picked up their 23rd win of the season -- a 13-9 thriller over the Hoyas.
Leadoff hitter Ryan Soares finished 3-for-3 with three RBIs and a run scored, including a solo home run in the fourth inning off of a first-pitch fastball.
Five other Patriots collected multiple hits, including catcher Josh Steinberg's 3-for-5 effort. Sophomore right-hander Ryan Brecko, who is 6-1 with a 3.75 ERA this season, earned his third save of the season by not allowing a run through the final three frame.
Despite an 0-for-5 effort in the game, Westfield graduate Justin Bour was named to the Dick Howser Watch List, an award handed out by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association to the nation's top player.
