Stillwell's surprise lifts Chargers
Junior Katie Stillwell, a midfielder on the Chantilly girls lacrosse team, scored with 2 minutes, 15 seconds left to seal a 9-8 win over Concorde District rival Oakton Monday night.
The goal was the second of the game for Stillwell, who was one of five Chargers to find the back of the net.
Oakton senior Ashley Kimener tallied three goals for the Cougars, but she was unable to notch her fourth during a furious rally in the final seconds.
“Every time we play against Oakton, one of our rivals, I'm just so fired up,” said Stillwell, who also scored on a sidearm shot to the left of Oakton goalkeeper Tory Morgan with 20:52 remaining in the second half. “The whole day I just couldn't wait to get out here and play [Oakton].”
Kimener was dominant in the early part of the game, scoring two of the Cougars' first three goals -- her third was the most impressive, featuring a deadly spin move and a spectacular individual effort.
Chantilly benefited from three different goals by three different players to close the opening half, as senior Christina Patten, junior Brittany Griel and junior Rayna Margolis pushed the lead to 6-4.
Griel's goal came after she swatted away Morgan's initial clearing attempt, as the talented midfielder corralled the loose ball and fired it home.
“I really believe we wouldn't be where we are right now unless my whole team played together,” said Chantilly coach Michele Gates, whose group will host Langley Tuesday. “You don't get to be where we are without the whole team working together.”
The two teams suffered through a 10-plus minute drought in scoring than spanned from Stillwell's second tally until Griel's third and final goal at 9:29 of the second half.
Oakton juniors Blair Keffer and Daley Michael scored back-to-back goals to knot the game at eight, but Stillwell's goal iced the win for Chantilly.
“I didn't even know I scored the game-winner,” said a surprised Stillwell. “I didn't know I was the last one to score. Wow. That's even better.”
