Ottavio, Mercier lead Woodson to win
The Woodson girls soccer team has an abundance of speed, and the Cavaliers put their quickness on display Friday night in a 5-1 victory over Liberty District rival Madison. Woodson's players appeared a step faster than the Warhawks, especially on the front line, where junior Lindsey Ottavio scored three goals.
“We're really a team,” Ottavio said. “We don't have star players, we have people all over the field who make big efforts. We work together, we're able to connect.”
Ottavio and junior Nichole Mercier each netted a goal, and senior Diana Weigel's blast from 25 yards out gave the Cavaliers (9-1-1, 5-0 Liberty District) a 3-0 halftime lead. Ottavio then took over in the second half, racing past Madison's defenders to score twice in less than two minutes, putting Woodson ahead 5-0 with 32 minutes remaining.
Junior Carolyn Kragie got Madison on the board with a nice goal nine minutes later, but that would be all the offense the Warhawks (6-4, 3-2) could muster.
“Non-stop all night,” said Woodson coach Sharon Andrulot, whose team has won nine straight games. “We attacked well from everywhere. The back four held it together for the most part.”
