Woman gives birth on off-ramp

Julia Turner usually has long labors, which is why she was so surprised when her fifth child started entering the world en route to the hospital on April 15.Five minutes into the ride to Inova Fair Oaks Hospital from their Oakton home, Turner realized “she was not going to make it.”
Her husband William Turner, co-founder and doctor of Centreville's Turner Chiropractic Clinic, was driving. He said he knew he was in trouble when his wife began to take off her pants.
By the time he pulled off on the ramp to Route 50 from Interstate 66, called 911 and opened his wife's car door, Mary Kathryn Turner was entering the world.
Within five minutes she had arrived, beating the emergency personnel to the scene.
William Turner remembers he was just reacting to an emergency situation when he was delivering his daughter.
Julia Turner, 42, who used to practice with her husband, said she is glad someone stayed calm. “I was kind of panicking a little bit,” she said.
The family didn't get any pictures of Mary Kathryn at her birth place before she was taken to Inova Fair Oaks to recover with her mother, but they plan to photograph the ramp for the baby's scrapbook, Julia Turner said.
The Turners have practiced in Centreville for about 15 years. Their other four children are John Paul, Joseph, Grace and James.
