Sheta, Messiah lead Westfield to win
Beginning a two-week stretch that could define its season, Westfield had a strong showing Monday night, defeating National District powerhouse Yorktown, 2-0. The Bulldogs will face Robinson and Herndon on the next two Mondays as they fight for the top spot in the Concorde District.
Senior captains A.J. Sheta and Trey Messiah each tallied a goal in the win, as Westfield improved to 6-0-1 on the season.
“I think we outworked them in all aspects of the game,” Messiah said. “We spent a lot of time last week working on shutting their key guys down. We just kept focus for 80 minutes.”
The Bulldogs earned a free kick at the top of Yorktown's box with 15 minutes remaining in the first half, and Sheta caught the Patriots off-guard with a quick restart. His shot curled into the right corner of the net, giving Westfield a 1-0 lead. Messiah doubled the Bulldogs' advantage when he one-timed a cross from senior Ricky Guerra past Yorktown's goalkeeper less than four minutes into the second half.
Keeper Tony Nosal and the Westfield defense gave another strong effort, recording the Bulldogs' fifth shutout of the season.
“Overall for the boys, good win for them, good team effort,” said Westfield coach Tom Torres. “They all worked hard. They all walked off the field knowing that they did a good thing.”
The Bulldogs will face Centreville Thursday night before traveling to Robinson next Monday.
