Festival aims to unify community
Several Fairfax County agencies are partnering to try and create unity out of diversity in the western part of the county. The first annual “Western Fairfax County Community Day” is being planned to “draw a community that is growing with diversity” together, said Wangin Bang, a member of the Park Authority helping to organize the event.
They chose Stone Middle School on Sully Park Drive in Centreville as the location for the event because of its centrality in the community, said Bang. Attractions will include free food, entertainment, and more than 30 vendors.
The western part of the county is a “big widespread region,” said Tilly Blanding, director of the region for the county's Department of Systems and Management for Human Services.
“The purpose of this event is people coming together to show we have a lot more in common than we think,” Blanding said.
They tried to recruit groups with a variety of ethnic backgrounds.
The Washington Korean Dancing Company, the Vietnamese Dance Troupe and the Guatemalan Group will be among the entertainers.
Some of the vendors will be displaying information about county services.
As county diversity has increased, the outreach has centered on integrating and educating immigrant families about their community, Bang said.
