Springfield 12-year-old publishes first fantasy novel

Writing your first book is difficult, especially when you have to go to karate or play basketball and soccer, while piles of homework have to get finished and dinner is getting cold.

Mustafa Sediqi, a 12-year-old student at Hunt Valley Elementary School in Springfield, is now working on his second book.

Intent on becoming an astronaut or a writer, Sediqi has already accomplished what many writers dream of – the writing and publishing of a body of work.

It helps when your first book is a fast-paced, ageless tale about defying overwhelming odds.

“The Legend of Morris” tells the story of young man intent on destroying the dragon that savagely murdered his family, even though the way to the dragon's lair is paved with the bones of great warriors.

Morris has done nothing of merit in his life until he discovers that he has something to live for: the destruction of a fire-breathing beast that took away from him a life that should have turned out better.

Facing an awful death, Morris goes ahead with his plan to fight the dragon, while glory awaits if he succeeds and a fiery death looms if he fails.

Still, things are looking up for the character. Before Morris found out about his family being killed, he really wasn't doing anything interesting anyway.

“He's a good hero for children, an ordinary person,” Sediqi said.

The theme of the book is simply good versus evil.

As far as writing books, Sediqi said his favorite part is receiving royalties, which can range from $1.16 to $4 every time someone buys a copy of the book.

“I'm trying to inspire myself to do something with my future,” Sediqi said. “I guess now is the time to say something to the world,” since the messages he has are worth being heard, he said.

The second book, tentatively titled “As You Command,” will be another story based on Sediqi's favorite subject, killing dragons. This time, if successful, the hero will get the girl.

Mustafa Sediqi's book can be found online at Amazon.com and www.xlibris.com.
