Snyder twins power Westfield win

With nobody out following a three-run homer in the top of the fifth inning Tuesday evening, Centreville sophomore pitcher Ryan Ashooh delivered a fastball to Westfield's Will Vardeman.

Vardeman made solid contact with the ball, smacking a liner right back at Ashooh. The ball struck the young left-hander on the left wrist and he went down in a heap.

"He's probably going for an X-ray, but I think he's gonna be all right," Centreville coach Morgan Spencer said. "The trainer didn't think it was broken, just a pretty bad bruise. He'll be pretty sore in the morning."

Ashooh, who allowed five runs on five hits, got the loss in the 13-0 decision to the Bulldogs. Westfield (6-4, 3-0 Concorde District) closed out the win with an eight-run seventh inning, highlighting the Wildcats' young and inexperienced pitching staff. Centreville fell to 1-8 overall and 0-4 on district play.

For the Bulldogs, the Snyder twins – seniors Matt and Mike – put on an offensive showcase. Mike blasted a two-run homer in the first inning, then launched a three-run shot in the fifth. Matt put the finishing touches on the win with a grand slam to right-center field that traveled roughly 400 feet. The brothers finished the day a combined 4-for-9 with three home runs and nine RBIs.

"Of course the Snyders had big nights and hit the ball out, and that's gonna happen," Westfield coach Chuck Welch said. "But it's a whole team package that they have to get on base for them to get RBIs. I think that's important too, that we have hitters in the lineup to protect them so that people do throw to him. They obviously had huge nights and they're a big power threat."
