Adult ed hosts home buyers

Prospective home buyers – and those interested in home improvement – can join other students going back to school this fall, in classes offered by the adult and community education section of Fairfax County Public Schools.

New this year is the course on "Fixing Up Your Home to Sell." Taught by a home-improvement contractor and real-estate agent, it will tell students which projects have the most appeal and which ones you can do yourself. The class will be taught in two sessions of two hours each, starting Monday, Nov. 5, at 7 p.m. at Chantilly High School, 4201 Stringfellow Road. Tuition is $39.

"How to Buy a Residence" is a series of three 2.5-hour classes beginning Thursday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. at Oakton High School, 2900 Sutton Road, Vienna. Tuition is $69.

A real estate broker-investor will teach "Investing in Real Estate Basics." Students will learn how to manage, sell or buy real estate. The two 2.5-hour sessions will begin at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Oakton High School and also Thursday, Oct. 18, at Chantilly High. Tuition is $49.

An attorney will present the program on "Landlording." It covers landlords' rights and responsibilities regarding leases, security deposits, maintenance, record keeping, eviction and the Virginia Residential Tenant Act. The single three-hour session starts at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 16, at Oakton High School and also Tuesday, Nov. 13, at West Springfield High, 6100 Rolling Road. Tuition is $49.

"New Home Construction: Buying Intelligently" features an optional field trip to a construction site and a builder's design center. Students will learn about contracts, negotiations, construction schedules, option selection and builder's incentives, plus current trends in floor plans, design and decoration. The three 2.5-hour sessions will start 7 p.m., Monday, Oct. 15, at Marshall High School, 7731 Leesburg Pike, Falls Church. Tuition $69.

Also of special interest to today's prospective home buyers is the workshop on "Your Credit: Scrub and Improve It." The three-hour session provides seven tips on understanding and increasing your credit score. It will start at 7 p.m., Monday, Dec. 3, at Marshall High School. Tuition $39.
