Greenspring's calendar girls

A mystery at Springfield's Greenspring Retirement Community in Springfield has residents questioning friends.

Of the 2,000 residents, 12 women have posed semi-nude for the 2008 Ladies of Greenspring Calendar. Who the models are – the eldest is 92 –will remain a secret until the calendar is released.

Speaking anonymously as Mrs. July, August and October, three women on the calendar stepped forward and revealed why after more than 70 years of civility, they chose to disrobe and pose with only small props hiding their naughty bits.

Mrs. July, 72, said she has always been as uninhibited as she is now, and laughed at the prospect of her six grandchildren seeing their naked grandmother at the beach, looking seductively at the camera, wearing only flip-flops and barely covered by a large hat.

Mrs. August, 83, is foreign born and worked with the CIA before retiring and moving to Greenspring almost five years ago.

In her picture she is leading a community sing-a-long naked, but with a guitar covering her.

“I think they chose people with some things they could cover themselves with,” Mrs. August said, adding that when she told her daughter about appearing nude in a calendar, her daughter said, “Oh, come on! Don't you think that's inappropriate?”

Mrs. October, 75, who moved to the area in 1955, will be holding two objects in both hands, holding them very low to shield herself from prying eyes.

Why did these women agree to this project?

All sales for the calendar will go to the Benevolent Care Fund, which assists Greenspring residents who have become financially strapped after years of living in the community.

“We're not young chicks. We're elderly women, and when I was young I would never have been a calendar girl,” said Mrs. October. “But we are part of the Benevolent Fund, too, and our goal is to sell 1,000 calendars.”
