Tall Oaks Giant closing
After 33 years in Reston's Tall Oaks Village Center, Giant will be closing its store there Nov. 28. The store opened its doors on Oct. 30, 1974.
Tams Bauer, a manager at the store, confirmed the store is closing but would not comment further. Jamie Miller, from the corporate office in Landover, Md., said the company would comment later this week.
A simple printed sign on the doors announces the store's closure and gives notice that the pharmacy will close earlier, on Nov. 19. Pharmacy records will be transferred to the Safeway in South Lakes shopping center.
On Tuesday afternoon, Emmett and Palmer Reagan shopped together as they have for 34 years. The couple, who live nearby, said they will remain loyal to Giant stores and take their business to the Fox Mill location.
“We're distressed to see it leave,” Palmer said. “I shopped here so much I got invited to an employee party.”
Colony Realty owns the bulk of the Village Center, and currently has 10,603 square feet of available space out of a total of 74,000. Julie Cyphers, a leasing agent for the properties, would not comment on the closure, which is the latest in a series at Tall Oaks. By the end of this month, the total empty square feet will reach 49,366, double the amount of occupied space, which will be 24,634 square feet.
John Albert, Director of the Tall Oaks at Reston assisted living community said the closure is a disappointment.
“From residents' standpoint, it's somewhat devastating; they like to go shop and have a nice place to get away,” he said.
The community does not rely on Giant for food or prescriptions. Albert said the vacancy rate in Tall Oaks may be due to location.
“We're just tucked away. I don't think Reston allows too much signage; it's hard to get back here.”
The former Burger King space is available for either the complete package with 3,300 square feet or two separate spaces of 1,525 and 1,828. The price for that space is $36 per square foot.
The space that used to house a Video Warehouse is available as a whole space of 4,320 square feet or separately as 2,745 and 1,573 square feet respectively. Those are available for $35 per square foot.
Two additional properties are available for lease on the lower level, one with 1,980 square feet and the other with 1,003. The lower-level properties are less expensive than the upper level ones, with leasing prices of $23 per square foot.
