Camp talk with Nick Sheehan
High school football teams throughout Loudoun are beginning official preparation for the 2007 fall season with the start of training camp.
The Times-Mirror sat down with Loudoun Valley rising junior Nick Sheehan after his July 26 morning conditioning session to ask him about training camp.
The Sheehan name is an easy one to remember at Loudoun Valley. Nick has three older brothers -- John, Stephen and Ryan -- who played sports for the Vikings. His younger brother, Matty -- a rising seventh-grader -- is on track to be the next Sheehan at Valley.
Nick was a starting cornerback for the Vikings last fall. He will play in the secondary again in 2007, along with competing for the starting quarterback job.
Q: How do you best deal with the heat?
A: We don't really ever think about it. [Head] coach [Bruce] Sheppard is always pushing us and he's never making us stop to think about the heat. So there is never really time to until after practice when we are all dead and tired.
Q: What do you like to do between two-a-day practices?
A: Eat and relax. And think about what I need to do better in the next practice.
Q: Who has the best work ethic on the team?
A: The whole team has a great work ethic. Coach Sheppard puts that into the team. There is really no slackers on the team.
Q: What's the one thing during practice that really upsets coach Sheppard?
A: Loafing, not listening and talking while he's talking. He'll make you run. He'll do whatever it takes to get it out.
Q: When does your body really start feeling the strain of camp?
A: After every practice.
Q: Who is the biggest prankster on the team?
A: Probably Eric Rothschild. He's does good impressions and he knows how to make people laugh.
Q: Which coach would suit up and play if allowed?
A: They all say they'd love to suit up again. But I think it would probably be [lineman] coach [John] Cowne or coach Sheppard.
Q: Which drill do you dread the most?
A: Anything that involves a lot of running and no break.
Q: Who has the biggest appetite on the team?
A: Wayne Savage. When we get pizza, he'll probably eat a box or two. He's huge.
Q: Which drill do you like the most?
A: I like them all. I like throwing the ball. That's fun. I like throwing passes to people and watching them catch it. I like doing scrimmages between the offense and the defense.
Q: How much weight have you lost in a day or week during camp?
A: The most I have ever lost is two or three pounds [in a day], not a lot. I keep hydrated.
Q: What keeps you motivated through camp?
A: Winning, being competitive. Always knowing you have a chance to win and you have a chance to go as far as you can.
