Glory Days: Abbott's up for an ESPY

Washington Glory pitcher Monica Abbott has received a 2007 ESPY nomination for "Best Female College Athlete."Abbott -- the Glory’s first-ever draft pick -- is expected to join the team in August after her summer Team USA obligations. The Glory, in its inaugural year with the National Pro Fastpitch league, plays its home games in Fairfax at George Mason University's softball complex.
In her senior season at the University of Tennessee, Abbott broke the NCAA record for career strikeouts (2,440), wins (189), shutouts (112) and game appearances (253), while leading the Lady Vols to the 2007 Women’s College World Series.
Abbott is a four-time NFCA All-American. The left-hander also established the single-season strikeout record of 724 during her senior year.

Abbott shares the ballot for “Best Female College Athlete” with fellow Lady Vol Candace Parker (basketball), Kerri Hanks of Notre Dame (soccer), Georgia's Kara Lynn Joyce (swimming) and Arizona's Taryn Mowatt (softball). The ESPYs will air July 15 at 9 p.m. on ESPN.
