New Year’s Eve: A time to sparkle
New Year’s Eve. It's the greatest party of the year. The best food, the best people and the best ... fashion. It's the one event that grants permission to even the most style-shy among us to step out in festive, flirty fashions. In fact, it demands it.
So herein lies the age-old dilemma: What are you going to wear? The good news is that this season's trends have offered up so much sparkle and shine, you should have no problem coming up with the perfect, flashy end-of-the-year send-off. Resolve to ring in 2008 with a look that hits all the right notes. Here's how.
Shiny, happy people
Shine this New Year's Eve with sequins, satins, metallic fabrics and accents. But don't get too carried away. The disco ball is your friend, not your competition. Choose one piece that will stand out and go easy on the accessories. Balance is the name of the game here.
Skin is in
It might be cold outside, but the party's just heating up. So be daring and show a little skin. This season has shown us tons of mini, strapless and backless dresses. Some are dripping in sequins; others are made from chiffon, satins and other elegant fabrics. But do be mindful of too much skin. For example, when going backless, keep the front high for balance.
Be a jewel
Whether it's jewel tones or jewels themselves, these have been one of this season's biggest trends. But if you've been too shy to glitz it up, now is the time. Be-gorgeous in be-jeweled tops and dresses with eye-catching jewels and beaded details along the neckline or hem.
If you're feeling bold, swap out the boring blacks and navys this year for purples, reds, pinks and royal blues. Or, if you have the perfect little black dress, glam up with a standout necklace, cocktail ring, cuff or even a be-jeweled clutch or barrette. But remember, too much of a good thing isn't good. Let one or two sparkly items speak for themselves.
Luxe tux
They look great on guys, so why not on women, too? If dresses and skirts are not your thing, or if you just want something different, try a tuxedo on for size. Make sure the suit is curve-hugging to show off your silhouette. Then pop your shirt collar, and wear it opened super low to keep this look ultra-sexy and surprisingly ultra-feminine.
Wrap in a bow
Bows aren't just for gifts this holiday season. They're wrapping up some stylish looks on dresses, clutches, shoes and headbands. Some are big and bold, others are small and simple. Who would've thought a bow could make such a statement?
A shoe-in for high style
Make tonight your very own episode of “Sex and the City” and step out in style. High style. Channel your inner Carrie Bradshaw and dare to wear some killer heels. Go for shiny colored satins, sassy metallics or a pair with sparkly gemstone accents. Or, if your plan is to dance the night away with moves that only Beyonce can do in heels, opt for flats. They are available in just as many great options. And remember: A broken ankle is never in fashion.
Makeup test
Up the drama with a bit more makeup than you might normally apply. Color your lids in smoky grays and blacks, or jazz them up with jewel-toned shades. Create seductive eyes by placing faux lashes on just the outer corner of your eyes, then extend your liner out as far as you dare. If you're showing some skin, try a body lotion with a hint of shimmer.
A great cover-up
You’re looking fab, so don’t cover it up with your old wool coat or puffy jacket. Whether coming or going, complete your great look with a fur- or faux-fur-trimmed coat.
If there’s ever a night to take it up a fashion notch, it’s New Year’s Eve. Don’t treat it like a normal Friday night. Leave your jeans at the back of your closet. Usher in 2008 with a spirited look and a feeling that sets the tone for a fabulous New Year.
