Where to have a splashy (but safe) New Year's Eve
"If you drink, don't drive." That's always great advice, especially on New Year's Eve. You won't even be tempted to try driving home after the traditional holiday tipple if you join one of these overnight celebrations for adult singles and couples at area hotels.
Hyatt Fair Lakes
In the newly renovated guest rooms, a bottle of champagne will be waiting for the party-goers. Then, they'll join the semi-formal dinner and celebration with The Rock and Roll Revue Band in the ballroom and DJ Phil in the atrium.
Dinner is from 6 to 10 p.m., followed by the party from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The buffet features beef medallions and sea scallops.
The package also includes five drink tickets per guest, followed by a midnight champagne toast and final coffee break. The celebration continues with the brunch buffet in the restaurant and atrium, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., with late checkout at 3 p.m.
With payment due in advance, the price is $449 per couple for the party and room, $199 per single adult for the party only and $365 per couple for party only.
Hyatt Regency Reston
Wayman Tisdale, the basketball pro turned jazz bass guitarist, will head the lineup on New Year's Eve, with Jay Lang of Smooth Jazz 105.9 as master of ceremonies.
The celebration starts at 8 p.m. and lasts through the midnight champagne toast and balloon drop. It continues next morning with the ballroom brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and checkout at 2 p.m.
All prices include the overnight stay. They begin at $499 per couple for the "Smooth Jazz Package." It features the dinner buffet with its carving station, four drink tickets per person and Wayman Tisdale's live jazz.
For $699, the "Ultimate Jazz Package" also includes the ballroom brunch, admission to the private Regency club lounge and preferred party seating. Attendees may also purchase the brunch separately at $55 per couple.
For $2,008, the Presidential Package also upgrades the accommodations to the newly renovated Presidential Suite with a bottle of Dom Perignon champagne and hors d'oeuvres, followed by breakfast in bed or the Sunday brunch, a Swedish massage and embroidered bathrobes.
Hyatt Place Dulles Airport South
Hyatt Place and the nearby Blue Water Grille have joined together in a New Year's Eve package.
At 5:30 p.m., the restaurant will begin serving a four-course feast. Menu choices include a breaded sea scallop appetizer, a crab bisque or Caesar salad, a "surf-and-turf" or roast duckling entree, and a tiramisu or chocolate amaretto cake dessert. The $60 per person charge also covers entertainment by DJ Paul Garza, party favors and a midnight champagne toast.
Within walking distance, the Hyatt Place offers accommodations at a special $79 rate. That fee includes the breakfast buffet from 7 to 10 a.m. Checkout is at noon, but late checkout may be available.
Tysons Corner Marriott
Don Shula is mostly known among sports fans for coaching the Miami Dolphins to a perfect season in 1972. To meat lovers, he is more famous for the Shula's Steak Houses.
The Tysons Corner Marriott location will host the New Year's Eve Dinner Celebration at $90 per person.
Seatings are between 5 and 10:30 p.m. Starters include a shrimp cocktail followed by a Caesar salad. Entree options start with the signature Shula Cut 16 oz. New York strip steak or 8 oz. filet mignon, plus seven-layer chocolate cake or cheesecake for dessert. Each guest will also be served a glass of champagne, and live music will continue throughout the evening.
At $349 per couple, the Overnight Dinner Celebration Package also features chocolate- covered strawberries and a champagne bottle in the guest bedroom, plus Shula's breakfast buffet from 7 a.m. to noon on New Year's Day, with a noon checkout time.
Westfields Marriott
The hotel's Palm Court restaurant will be the setting for the dinner drinks, dancing and champagne toast. Seating starts at 8 p.m. and continues every half hour to 9:30 p.m.
The Barry Felder Jazz Duo will play light jazz standards from 8 to 10:30 p.m. during the dinner buffet, which features a carving station. Brass Alley will take over at 10:30 p.m., to accompany the dancing with classics from the '40s through the '90s.
