Briar Woods shines in rematch
HEDGESVILLE, W.VA. -- What a difference a season makes.Hedgesville (W.Va.) put up 34 points on the scoreboard and limited Briar Woods to just seven in a 27-point win during week nine of the 2006 campaign.
The 2007 season opener between the same two teams Aug. 24 would prove to be a different story.
The Falcons displayed a balanced offensive attack and stepped up defensively against the run en route to a 28-13 victory over the host Eagles on Friday night.
“We talked since Aug. 1 that we would have to overcome adversity this year, and in this first game,” Briar Woods coach Charlie Pierce said. “Part of that adversity was our immaturity last year. We are seasoned and more mature this year. We overcame some things here and pulled the game out.”
Senior standouts quarterback Alex Munro and wide receiver Tim King hooked up on a pair of passing touchdowns for Briar Woods. Munro finished the game with 200 yards passing, and King reached the century mark in receiving yards.
The most pleasant surprise for the Falcons was their ability to run the ball and slow the run on defense. Briar Woods rushed for 145 yards and nearly doubled Hedgesville's output on the ground – a complete reversal from last year's game.
“I felt if we could run the ball on a consistent basis and stop the run on a consistent basis, we had a good chance,” Pierce said. “Because our passing game I felt was better than their passing game. You saw that tonight. We had a couple of stupid mistakes ... but overall, I felt it was a total team effort.”
Junior JT Bailey helped spark the defense from his linebacker position.
“Last year against this team wasn't that great,” Bailey said. “We stepped it up. Our defense completely demolished them. We barely let anything go by us. I'm just proud to say we are leaving here with a win.”
Sophomore Billy McDonald led the Falcons rushing attack. The 5-foot-10, 245-pound bruiser gained 95 yards on 11 carries, including a 38-yard touchdown run to close out the scoring.
“I give all the credit to my offensive line,” McDonald said. “I wouldn't have been able to gain any yards without them. I just kept moving my legs and running hard. This is my biggest game yet. I knew I was going to get a chance and I think I did pretty well.”
Briar Woods is now 7-4 all time in varsity football. The third-year Brambleton school competed at the junior varsity level in the program's first year.
The Falcons will look to carry their momentum into this week when the play at Millbrook, Aug. 31 at 7 p.m.
