Shain commits to William & Mary

Rising senior Cole Shain figures to be a key component for a pair of Broad Run High School athletic programs – baseball and football – this upcoming school year.

The left-handed Shain was the pitching ace for a Spartan baseball team that won its first Dulles District title since 1996 as a junior, and also led the county in passing yards (1,236) for a much-improved Broad Run football team last fall.

So when a partial scholarship offer surfaced for the rising senior to attend and play baseball at William & Mary, Shain jumped at the chance to secure his plans beyond high school.

“It's nice because it allows me to focus on my senior year, rather than having to focus on where I'm going to college,” Shain said of his early decision.

Shain, a first-team All-Dulles District choice in both sports as a junior, said he wasn't big enough to play college football and was more attractive to college baseball programs being a lefty.

He also drew interest from Virginia Military Institute, Bucknell and Lafayette, but felt William & Mary was his best fit. The Tribe are Division I members of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).

“It's a great school to attend academically and the coaching staff there is really good,” Shain said.

Shain throws a fastball, curve, change-up and slider -- his fastball tops out at about 85 miles her hour. Shain carries a 3.75 grade point average at Broad Run and is considering a major in education at William & Mary.

He caught the eye of the Tribe coaching staff with his play at a showcase tournament in Virginia Beach earlier this summer. His play on the diamond for Broad Run last spring had already drawn rave reviews locally.

Shain was 7-2 with a paltry 1.02 earned run average and 61 strikeouts compared to 21 walks as a junior. He also tossed a complete game in the Spartans' 4-2 win over Monticello in the Region II playoffs.

“He's really dedicated himself on the baseball field and in the classroom,” Broad Run coach Pat Cassidy said. “For a kid that's worked so hard, I'm glad to see him get a chance to play Division I ball at a great school.”
