Special election for state senator planned for January
Candidates nominated for Jan. 12 race for Cuccinelli's seat in the 37th District
Candidates are lining up to replace state Sen. Ken Cuccinelli III (R-Centreville), who was elected Virginia's attorney general last month.
On Monday, Gov. Tim Kaine (D) set the 37th District special election for Jan. 12, the day before the 2010 Virginia General Assembly session begins.
That leaves candidates a little more than six weeks to get their messages out to voters.
Republicans were slated to select their nominee during a so-called firehouse primary Tuesday evening, after the Times' deadline. Three candidates were seeking the nomination: Former at-large Fairfax County School Board member and SAIC employee Steve Hunt; Marianne Horinko, who served as acting administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency during President George W. Bush's first term and now runs a small business; and Will Nance, executive director of the Greenspring retirement community in Springfield and an appointee to the George H.W. Bush Administration.
The Fairfax County Democratic Committee canceled its scheduled nominating caucus after only one candidate filed. Del. Dave Marsden (D-Burke), who was just re-elected to a third term as delegate, is now in the running for the Senate seat.
The 37th District primarily covers the southwestern corner of Fairfax County and extends east along Fairfax County Parkway, including all or parts of Centreville, Chantilly, Fair Oaks, Fair Lakes, Fairfax Station and Burke.
A date for the school board special election, to fill Kaye Kory's Mason District board seat, has not yet been set. Kory was elected to the 38th District House of Delegates seat, serving the Falls Church area.
Because the election must be held a certain number of days after Kory resigns, the school board special election most likely will not be set for the same day, according to Judy Flaig, county election manager.
