Police shoot and kill man during traffic stop
Three Fairfax County officers placed on administrative leave after shooting
Fairfax County police shot and killed a Fredericksburg man Friday.
Officers responded to a report of a larceny in progress at a business on 8800 block of Route 1 shortly after 1 p.m., police said. A suspect fled the scene in a green Chevrolet Blazer before police arrived.
An officer spotted the vehicle in the area of Route 1 and Shields Avenue in the Fairfax County portion of Alexandria, police said .
Police gave chase, but the man did not pull over until heavy traffic forced him to stop. After the vehicle stopped, the man may have left his car.
"We do not conclusively know at this time if he exited the vehicle," said police spokesman Bud Walker Tuesday.
An officer shot David Alan Masters, 52, in the upper body, Walker said.
The Blazer continued a short distance until it struck another motorist's vehicle near Richmond Highway and Fort Hunt Road. The driver of that vehicle did not suffer any serious injuries, police said.
Police said they immediately began CPR on Masters after he was shot and waited for an ambulance to arrive.
Masters was then transported to Inova Mount Vernon Hospital and pronounced dead a short time later. Three officers directly involved in the incident were placed on administrative leave pending the results of parallel criminal and administrative investigations by Internal Affairs, police said.
Walker said several officers responded to the scene, but only three were placed on leave.
He said the shooter, whom police did not name, has not yet made arrangements to be interviewed by detectives.
"By law we can not compel him to do so," Walker said.
By policy, Fairfax County does not release the names of officers involved in shootings. "We are looking forward to releasing further information in the future, but right now we don't want to contaminate the investigation," Walker said, adding that it is possible some eyewitnesses to the shooting have not been interviewed. "I urge anyone with information in this case to come forward," he said.
