Oakton grad hits milestone
Connecticut College volleyball senior co-captain Lauren Wise, a graduate of Oakton High School, became just the second player in Connecticut history to eclipse both 1,000 kills and 1,000 digs in her career. This year, Wise has 245 kills, 40 service aces and 218 digs. Connecticut is currently 21-5 on the year and the Camels will be competing in their fifth consecutive New England Small College Athletic Conference Championship quarterfinal Friday. Wise is also a member of the All-Academic team.
Steinhagen wins girls' golf title
Oakton's Amanda Steinhagen won the Virginia State Girls Open with a 36-hole total of 2-under-par 70-68-138. Steinhagen had also won the state title as a sophomore in 2007. Steinhagen is the only two-time winner of the competition, which began in 2002. Her 36-hole total of 138 is the tournament's lowest score, shattering the previous mark of 143. The VSGO was held at the Kempsville Greens Golf Course in Virginia Beach.
GMU cross country earns top-three finishes
George Mason University's men's and women's cross country teams each took home top-three finishes at the 2009 Colonial Athletic Association Championships in New Market on Saturday. The men earned their fifth consecutive top-three finish at the championship with three All-CAA performances by Everett Hackett, Sam Horn and Schott Tekesky. The women finished in third place thanks to strong efforts from freshmen Rochelle Sceats and Laura Sinclair.
Mason women's soccer ties record
The George Mason University women's soccer team finished the regular season with a 14-4-2 record, the most wins by a Patriot team since 1997. Last year's Patriots won only five games. The nine-win difference between the 2008 and 2009 seasons tied a Colonial Athletic Association record for the best single-season improvement. The Patriots' 4-0 win over Towson was the final home game for seniors Jessi Hart (Hayfield), Patti Benner (Centreville), Leslie Cabe (Lake Braddock) and Colleen Killiany (W.T. Woodson).
