A 'Shuler' kind of weekend?
It's Friday! As I write, there are only 23 hours until the 2008 NFL Draft commences on ESPN. They were nice enough to give you three extra hours of analysis before their insane amount of coverage. From what Chris Long eats to the color of Darren McFadden's boxers, anything you want to know (and a lot of things you don't) about a player will be covered.
Don't get me wrong, I am excited to see what the Washington Redskins will do with their nine picks. They are a semi-solid team that has needs for improvement, especially in the secondary and defensive line areas. But I don't plan on sitting through hours upon hours of useless tidbits on who will be great and who will not. I learned a long time ago not to trust anything these guys say. No matter how much you analyze them, you won't know anything until they play a down in the NFL.
Take Heath Shuler, one of the biggest busts of all time for the Redskins. He was the third pick overall in the 1994 NFL Draft and first quarterback chosen. The Redskins were hoping Shuler would be their quarterback of the future after falling on hard times since Super Bowl XXVI. That future did not last long as less than two seasons in, Shuler battled injuries and posted 3-13 and 6-10 seasons. Gus Frerotte, picked in the seventh round at 197, was named the starter towards the end of Shuler's second season thus ending his time with the Redskins. He is currently a U.S. Congressman for the 11th District of North Carolina.
I look at the draft this year and see a similar situation. There are clearly no Tom Brady's or Ben Roethlisberger's in the draft and the quarterback pool is shallow. Running backs are a luxury with McFadden being the clear cut favorite. The most quality players are linemen, which can be even more questionable at a different level.
So who will the Redskins draft? Mock drafts suggest wide receiver Devin Thomas from Michigan State will be selected by the Redskins....at number 21. AHHHHH! Sean Taylor! Calm down. It's just a coincidence (even though it is a little eerie.)
All in all, the draft should bring some great players to the NFL. The question remains who will they be: the early or the late rounders? Guess we'll have to wait and see.
