Breaking out of a slump
Many apologies for the infrequent blog posts here. This has been my first true lull of creativity since becoming a full-time writer on Sept. 17, 2007, but I wholeheartedly feel that I'm breaking out of it.I've been feeling a little bit more liberated and literary lately, so I promise a bit of an uptick on my posting.
First, however, I'd like to explain why I felt as if I wasn't living up to the standard set on this blog.
I spent most of my life playing baseball, trying to make sense of this craft called hitting. And probably the reason that I'm writing about hitting and not actually performing the act would probably substantiate the fact that I never did really make sense of it.
I think that you can link writing to hitting rather easily. Both have their ups and downs, their slumps and their hot streaks. Sometimes the thoughts are flowing and it's rather easy to tap out blog entries and stories ... other times the brain is a wasteland.
In hitting, many times you fall victim to trying to be too fine, trying to find that perfect pitch that truly doesn't exist. Literary translation: trying to find the perfect blog topic, not just tossing out a few thoughts and letting your personality shine through.
I've been in a bit of a slump lately, I'll admit. I've been looking for a waist-high, four-seam fastball and I don't think that Odalis Perez -- a timely reference, glad to see him get his first win of the season last night -- is aiming to throw one there.
Here's to taking the ball the other way, trying to bunt for a single or even draw a walk.
Whatever that means.
