This Week's Poll

What do you think the General Assembly will do to address the transportation issue when they return to Richmond next month?

A plan with local and statewide components will pass.
A plan with only regional components will pass.
No bills will pass both houses.
Only the bill requiring more auditing of VDOT will pass.

Pathetic or apathetic?

I'm pathetic. I really am.

I went to Nationals Park last night for the opener of a four-game set against the Pittsburgh Pirates ... wait a second, I think I'm apathetic. Ya, that's it. I'm apathetic.

Anyway, I went to Nationals Park last night. I figured this was my final test to see whether or not I still liked any member of the Pittsburgh Pirates more than a friend.

Nope. Apathetic.

I found myself more excited by Wil Nieves' two-run single in the second inning, and Austin Kearns' opposite-field base hit in the eighth that provided the go-ahead RBI.

Freddie Sanchez' solo home run in the fourth inning just didn't do it for me.

How could it? It's been too long -- 15 straight losing seasons -- and the Nationals are too exciting.

An example: The Pirates recently released pitcher Matt Morris, who, along with his exorbitant salary, was acquired in a trade with San Francisco last summer. I can't say for sure whether the Morris deal prohibited the possible signing of prospect Matt Wieters -- who was eventually snatched up by the super-psyched Orioles -- but I can say that the $10 million-plus would've been better spent on Wieters.

Meanwhile, the Nationals were busy selecting players that -- while there is no such thing as a guaranteed success in baseball -- will at least give them a little better chance of obtaining success.

Such is the reason for my semi-departure from Pirate City. There are a few enjoyable pieces of the Pirates' puzzle, including Zach Duke's seven splendid innings last night.

(Just for the record, I don't know why anyone ever screwed with Duke's mechanics. He was so successful as a rookie, but Jim Colborn decided to tinker and I don't think Duke has been the same since.)

I've blogged about this topic before, but I was still curious to see how it would play out last night.

Two other notes:

The Washington Post hired an ex-Pittsburgher to take over for Barry Svrluga (Nationals beat writer). I don't remember reading any of this guy's stuff in The Post-Gazette, but I'm sure I did at some point.

And, does Dmitri Young really look this much like Johan Santana? I don't think so.
