New year, new shows

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and is now eager to return to area theaters.

Five shows open Jan. 18: The Alliance Theatre's "Goldilocks on Trial" in Centreville; McLean Community Players' "Red Hot & Cole"; Reston Community Players' "An Experiment with an Air Pump"; 2nd Flight Productions' "Some Girl(s)" in Manassas; and Vienna Theatre Company's "Prelude to a Kiss."

Elden Street Players stages "Hedda Gabler," starting Jan. 26 in Herndon.

Watch for the Jan. 9 edition of Go for all the details.

Auditions

Elden Street Players is auditioning for six parts in its production of "The Memory of Water" by Shelagh Stephenson, which will be on stage March 21 to April 12. Four roles are for women in their 30s and 40s, and two are for men in their 30s to 50s.

The dates are Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 12-13, 3-5 p.m. Auditions take place at 750 Center St., in Herndon.

Attention to physical similarities will be included in casting decisions. Modified British accents will be used. Preferred but not required is a prepared brief monologue to illustrate comic timing and accent, plus cold readings from the script.

Callback date is Jan. 15, 7:30 p.m.

The play revolves around shared memories from four perspectives, recollecting (or misremembering) family stories, and familial conflict with the resulting bickering, love, anger, laughter and tears that make for a bittersweet, humor-through-tragedy comedy.
