Dear Herndon,

Serving as the mayor of your town has to be the most rewarding job in politics, and I thank you all for placing your trust in me for all this time.  Over the past 10 years I have had the opportunity to visit hundreds of town businesses and have been on every street and in every neighborhood in town.  The best part of the job has been all the people I’ve met along the way - all over town and of the Commonwealth.   When I first ran for office, I knew I’d be spending a lot of time on land-use and transportation issues.  What I didn’t realize was that I would also become connector and cheerleader-in-chief!

My proudest accomplishment is finally moving forward with a vibrant, walkable, arts-focused downtown redevelopment plan; something the town has tried to make happen since the 1980s.   Downtown redevelopment was my number one priority throughout my tenure and  signing off on the final approvals and closing documents was my last official act as Mayor.  The perfect bookend to my decade of service.  Serving as Herndon’s mayor has been the honor of my life, and I will definitely miss being in office once January rolls around.  Fortunately, the town is in good hands with our next mayor and our outstanding professional staff!  I look forward to a long future ahead as Citizen Lisa, knowing from a unique perspective that our town is a place that truly cares for its residents.

Mayor Lisa Merkel
