Dear Editor,

Your recent article about plans to build a new elementary school on Blake Lane Park property, which is currently being used as a no-leash dog park, caught my eye. The FCPS Capital Improvement Program shows a declining student population in 2021-2023; however, the overcrowding in the Oakton Pyramid is a longstanding issue. As a recent graduate of Oakton HS, I can attest to the long-overdue remodeling now underway that should correct classroom overcrowding, the need for more lockers, parking spaces, etc. Overcrowding occurred in the elementary and middle schools as well. Overpopulation is a global issue, and it is evident in the overcrowding we see in Fairfax County schools. The better education children receive, the more prepared they are to succeed in life. There is ample park space in Fairfax County, and the needs of students and teachers should be considered above the desire for a dog park. As a community, we have limited choices: build a new school, live with overcrowding, or pay for private schooling.
