Dear Editor:

This is in response to the letter “President Trump is here to stay” by Donna Widowski, published on October 18.

Impeachment is not about whether or not you like a president or his policies.

It is about the commission of “high crimes and misdemeanors.”

Therefore, a recitation of a president’s accomplishments is no defense. President Nixon had many accomplishments during his administration, including passage of the Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act, establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency, opening the door to the establishment of diplomatic relations with China, and ending the war in Vietnam, just to name a few.

Yet, these, correctly, had no bearing on impeachment. President Nixon resigned when it became clear that there was a bipartisan conclusion that his participation in the Watergate burglary and cover-up constituted impeachable offenses.

President Trump should be judged on the facts as to whether he committed impeachable offenses and nothing else.
