Lets’ celebrate youthful art. The Parents Teacher Association (PTA) started the Reflections program in 1969 to recognize artists in our public schools from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. There are six categories for students to submit their original artwork: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography and Visual Arts.

Let’s start with the first place winner in the Visual Arts category this year: Katie Jeong, an 11th grader from McLean High School in Fairfax. Her painting “Within Mother Nature” won first place on the local and the state level. Now, she is competing at the national level! “National results are due May 1, though I guess the pandemic could change that,” shares Cathy Petrini, Northern Virginia District PTA Reflections Chair. “The artwork in this category is superb. I think your readers will be impressed!”

This is Jeong’s artist statement: “Let’s look within Mother Nature showing us the green hope in reply to our anxiety about the desertifying world. A bird symbolizes the living thing on the Earth and it expresses anxiety about the future of the world due to global warming or desertification. Mother Nature is symbolized by a female head within which the very green leaves are growing, i.e., the green hope which we should look within the nature.”
