Fairfax County police are investigating a homicide in the Culmore area.

Police said they were called to the 6000 block of Bellview Drive shortly after 2 a.m. Monday for a report of a suspicious person. Once there, police said they discovered the body of a man in a parking lot with fatal trauma to his upper body. The victim was later identified as Filaberto Felipe Paz Ramirez, 27, of the 6000 block of Knollwood Drive.

Police did not disclose the exact manner of death, saying only that a gun was not involved.

“We know that he was not shot,” said police spokesperson Roger Henriquez. “But we are not revealing whether he was stabbed or beaten.”

According to Henriquez, an autopsy has been completed and police are now investigating the case as a homicide. “We initially thought this might have been a deliberate act by someone known to Mr. Paz Ramirez,” Henriquez said. “But upon further investigation, we now believe it was likely a random act.”

Henriquez said there is no reason to believe the incident was gang related, but that the case remains under investigation and that robbery did not appear to be the intent. “No property appeared to have been taken,” he said.

Henriquez said Paz Ramirez’s family in Guatemala have been made aware of his death and that there are currently no suspects. “Police have been canvassing door-to-door in the neighborhood trying to get information,” he said Tuesday afternoon.
