2013 record: 12-1
Head coach: Jim Poythress
Key players: WR/DB AJ Alexander, Sr.; RB Dejoun Lee, Sr.; QB Kyle Edwards, Jr.; DE/WR Tyreek Middleton, Sr.; DB Peyton Scott, Jr.; LB Lamont Atkins, Soph.
Outlook: Even without Caleb Henderson, Lake Braddock brings back an explosive offense and a defense full of playmakers. Alexander is the team’s leader and highlight reel on both sides of the ball. If they stay healthy, the Bruins should continue to improve as their younger players get the hang of things.
2013 record: 9-3
Head coach: Gerry Pannoni
Key players: RB Rob Avery, Sr.; RB/S Gerald Hulett, Sr.; WR Kevin Quigley, Sr.; QB DeAndre Clayton, Jr.; LB Kevin Allen, Jr.; DL Bryce Nalls, Sr.
Outlook: The Stallions are very stout defensively with the return of nine starters and the arrival of transfer linebacker Kevin Allen. Losing David Symmes at quarterback hurts, but DeAndre Clayton has plenty of help in an attack that features multiple running threats. Expect South County to contend with Centreville for a region title.
2013 record: 3-7
Head coach: Jason Eldredge
Key players: SB Darean Robertson, Jr.; RB Adis Ojeda, Sr.; QB Jake Herzog, Soph.; DB Ryan Bursiek, Sr.
Outlook: Stonewall Jackson transfer Darean Robertson might be small, but he infuses West Springfield’s offense with speed and athleticism in the slot. The Spartans will improve this year behind their eight returning starters on defense.
2013 record: 3-7
Head coach: Mike Dougherty
Key players: QB Patrick Riley, Sr.; WR Will Cogan, Sr.; WR/DB China Moon, Sr.; WR/DB Conor McLaughlin, Sr.; LB Jacob Oleyar, Sr.
Outlook: With a good amount of talent at the skill positions, the Cavaliers are adjusting well to Dougherty’s high-octane spread offense. Coaches hope their players’ improved fitness will help them in tight situations late in games.
2013 record: 7-4
Head coach: Dennis Randolph
Key players: QB Darius Holland, Sr.; RB Mahlique Booth, Jr.; C Nick Stone, Sr.; LB Chris Gannon, Sr.
Outlook: The graduation of North Carolina commits Jeremiah Clarke and Malik Carney created a leadership vacuum at T.C. Williams. Entering his second season starting under center, Darius Holland can help fill the void by showing more poise as a passer.
2013 record: 1-9
Head coach: Mike Scott
Key players: RB/DB Devin Hamlett, Sr.; WR/DB Colin Corey, Jr.; QB Tucker Mack, Jr.; DB/WR Tim Johnson, Jr.; LB Akim Bangor, Sr.; DL Tony Gibbs, Sr.
Outlook: Annandale has joined the no-huddle craze sweeping the region, hoping to inject some life into an offense that’s struggled to score against quality competition in recent years. Expect the Atoms to pick up some wins behind an evolving defense.
2013 record: 4-6
Head coach: Jeremiah Ross
Key players: QB Preston Jones, Sr.; WR Marquis Saldana, Sr.; S Glenn Rushing, Sr.
Outlook: It’s a clean slate for the Wolverines, who lost coach Jeremiah Davis to Herndon and all-around star Demornay Pierson-El to Nebraska. Coach Ross, a California native, hopes Jones can use his experience to successfully run the team’s new no-huddle spread offense.
