Fairfax County police have charged a Lorton couple with crimes surrounding their involvement with an elementary school Parent Teacher Organization.
Amy King, 39, of Grayson’s Mill Lane, PTO president at Ft. Belvoir Elementary School, was charged with embezzlement on Tuesday. Her husband, Jermaine King, 40, was charged with grand larceny on May 8. Police said they were alerted to the situation on April 4 after a school employee noticed that checks were bouncing. The allegedly stolen monies were part of the PTO’s general fund, raised by school fundraisers and PTO membership fees. On Thursday, Fairfax County Public Schools spokesman John Torre said that PTO funds are separate from FCPS funds.
In a letter sent to parents of students at Ft. Belvoir Elementary School, Principal Theresa A. Carhart said several thousand dollars had been allegedly embezzled.
“Our school’s effort to seek transparency regarding PTO funds led to the discovery of the alleged fraud,” she wrote. “I know this news comes as a shock to all of us, but it would be unproductive for us to engage in speculation and rumors while these cases play out in the criminal justice system in the weeks and months ahead.”
Police say the investigation is ongoing.
“This was the second year Amy King was serving as PTO president,” Torre said.
Jermaine King’s attorney, Robert Gookin, did not immediately return phone messages left for him. No attorney information for Amy King is listed in court records.
