Fairfax County police say two pedestrians were attacked by a machete-wielding mugger in the Mount Vernon area early Sunday morning, sending one man to the hospital.

Two men were out walking around 1 a.m. in the 3400 block of Lockheed Boulevard when they were approached by two other men, according to police. The approaching men demanded money but the walking men refused, and fled on foot.

Police said the two suspects then chased the victims and one suspect assaulted both victims with a machete.

One victim was taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said both suspects were described as black. One was 16-20 years old, about 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighing 200 pounds. The second was described as in his 20s and about 5 feet 8 inches tall.

“Although a machete was involved, there is nothing to indicate that this incident was gang-related,” said Fairfax County Police spokesman Eddie Azcarate.
