The Fairfax County School Board has hired a new audit manager to bring additional oversight for the school system’s $2.5 billion budget.
Chris Horton will serve as audit manager within the School Board’s Office of Internal Audit.
School Board Chair Ilryong Moon (At-large) said in a statement that the new position answers the county Board of Supervisors’ request for greater efficiency in the school budget. The Board of Supervisors approves the school system budget each year.
“His addition to the staff of the audit office will enable the school board to expand our efforts to improve services and save tax dollars,” Moon said.
The internal audit office is responsible for helping improve effectiveness and accountability across the school system by providing independent analysis to the School Board. To maintain independence, the office operates outside the FCPS administrative structure, instead reporting directly to the School Board’s audit committee.
Horton comes to Fairfax County from Colorado, where he served as internal audit supervisor of city and county of Denver’s audit office.
While high school seniors are getting ready to make their final college decisions, other students are just at the beginning of the college selection process.
To support middle school students and their families as they start on this road, the county school system is partnering with College Access Fairfax to bring workshops on college financial aid to eight middle schools.
The events will cover the real cost of attending college, the basics of financial aid, plans for college savings and the college and career resources available from FCPS. Families can register for the event at Collegeaccessfairfax.org. Registration is requested but not required.
The college financial aid workshops will be held on:
